You may choose to fill the receptacle with dry substrate (aquarium gravel, sand, crystals, beads, sea glass, etc.) for air plants, or soil with drainage layer for succulents and cactus. It's purely decorative for the air plant, but does help to prop up and anchor them for display.

This planter is 8.7" width x 7.8" height. The planting receptacle extends from the wall approximately 2.5".
